Finding Inspiration in Every Turn
Welcome to the Hartslog Heritage Museum
Every town has a story, but ours begins with a hollow log, a fur trader, and a pack of hungry horses.
Long before Alexandria was laid out as a town, the legendary 18th-century trader John Hart used a hollowed-out log along the Frankstown Path as a feeding trough for his horses. Settlers moving into this stunning slice of the Juniata Valley began calling the area "Hart's Log." Though the wilderness has since given way to our beautiful historic borough, that spirit of resourcefulness, resilience, and community remains right here at the heart of the Hartslog Heritage Museum.

Our Story & Our Home
Founded in 1975 by a passionate group of local citizens from the Alexandria Memorial Public Library, the museum serves as the keeper of our region's rich Scotch-Irish, German, and Appalachian pioneer heritage.
Huntingdon County Historical Society
We are proudly located on the entire second floor of the historic Alexandria Memorial Public Library building on Main Street. Built in 1906, this gorgeous structure has its own deep roots in the community—our museum floor originally served as a bustling town auditorium with hundreds of seats, filling a vital need for the local school and community gatherings. Today, it serves a new purpose: preserving the memories of those who built the place we call home.
Step Into the Past
The Hartslog Heritage Museum houses a diverse collection of over 4,000 authentic artifacts that tell the story of the Hartslog Valley and the evolution of American small towns. Our exhibits don't just display objects; they recreate the vibrant, remarkably self-sufficient lifestyle of the local families who lived here over a century ago.
When you walk through our doors, you will explore:
-
The Country Store & Watch Shop: Experience commercial life in the 1830s, complete with early patent medicines and timeless master timepieces.
-
The Artisan Trades: Get up close with the actual hand tools used by the local blacksmiths, coppersmiths, carpenters, and barrel makers (coopers) who forged the valley's infrastructure.
-
The Family Parlor & Textile Collection: Peer into everyday domestic life, featuring antique clothing, historical farm and kitchen utensils, and rare local artwork.
-
Historic Camera Collection: A fascinating look at how our ancestors captured their own fleeting moments in time.
Preserving More Than Just Objects "The history being preserved in this museum is more than just that of our area—it is a living window into the self-reliance and community spirit of small-town America."
Hartslog Day: Our Living Tradition
We don’t just keep history behind glass—we bring it to life on the streets! The Hartslog Heritage Museum is the proud organizer of Hartslog Day, our premier heritage festival held annually on the second Saturday of October.
Every autumn, thousands of visitors descend upon Alexandria's Main Street to celebrate the harvest season. The festival fills the air with live Appalachian fiddle music, the aroma of homemade apple butter, and lines of vendors showcasing heritage crafts like hand-sewn quilts, thrown pottery, and hand-forged ironwork. It is our favorite way to honor our roots, connect neighbors, and welcome guests into the valley.
